KANTÔ
KANREI / KUBÔ |
|
|
The office of Kanto Kanrei was established by
Ashikaga Takauji in 1349 and was alloted to his son Motouji as a way of
maintaining Ashikaga influence in the Kanto region. In 1432 Ashikaga Mochiuji,
the 4th Kanto kanrei was accused of rebellious activities and was
destroyed on the orders of Ashikaga Yoshinori. Ashikaga Shigeuji was allowed
to maintain the office of Kanto kanrei but after moving from Kamakura
to the Koga area became known as the Koga Kubô. In 1561 the
rank of Kanrei was conferred on Uesugi Kenshin at his request by
the shôgun Ashikaga Yoshiteru.
