Shimazu Hisanaga was a Satsuma han karô who served under Shimazu Nariakira. Following Nariakira's death in 1858, however, he was dismissed from his position as the domain was returned to a more conservative mode; however, he was then restored to his position as karô under Shimazu Tadayoshi.
